Dubai crown prince settles hospital bill of Nigerian couple stranded with their quadruplets

Dubai crown prince, Hamdan bin Mohammed has paid the hospital bill of a Nigerian family that was stranded in the country.  It was reported earlier that Tijani and Suliyah Abdulkareem who welcomed their quadruplets at the Latifa Hospital for Women and Children on July 1, had no medical insurance and were indebted to the tune of $120,000. They incurred the medical bill after their babies (two boys and two girls) were placed on ventilators at the neonatal intensive care unit after being born prematurely.  Expressing gratitude to Hamdan bin Mohammed for coming to their aid, Abdulkareem said two of the children will be named after him while one of the girls will be named after the hospital. He said;  “It’s just a huge favour, and we are still in shock because we didn’t even know how to get the money. Egypt court sentences five young women to prison for posting "indecent" dance videos on TikTok

An Egyptian court has sentenced five young women to two years in prison for posting "indecent" dance videos on TikTok.   The prosecution statement named two of the defendants 20-year-old student Haneen Hossam and 22-year-old Mawada Eladhm and said the other three helped run their social media accounts. The women were also fined 300,000 Egyptian pounds (A$26,000) each for "violating the values and principles of the Egyptian family," inciting debauchery and promoting human trafficking, according to a statement from the public prosecutor. Haneen Hossam and Mawada Eladhm rose to fame though TikTok, amassing millions of followers for their video snippets which include sharing of footage of themselves wearing makeup, posing in cars, dancing in kitchens and making funny skits. However, their social media stardom became their undoing in a country, where citizens can land in prison for vague crimes such as “misusing social media,” “disseminating fake news,” or “inciting deba

Orji Uzor Kalu receives rousing welcome in Abia as he returns home months after he was released from prison (photos)

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu received a rousing welcome when he returned to Abia state on Monday, July 27, months after he was released from prison. Recall that in December 2019, the former Abia state governor was sentenced to 12 years in prison after he was convicted for N7.1bn fraud alongside his firm, Slok Nigeria Limited, and a former Director of Finance during his tenure, Ugo Udeogu. The Supreme court on May 8, 2020, then nullified Kalu and Udeogo's conviction on grounds that the presiding judge, Justice Mohammed Idris, lacked the jurisdiction to have presided over their case. Two pastors bag 26 years in jail for allegedly stealing N32m

Justice F. N. Azinge of the Delta State High Court sitting in Otor-Udu has convicted and sentenced the duo of Pastor Glory Okeoghene Aberefa and Reverend Vincent Okpogo to 16 and 10 years imprisonment respectively for allegedly stealing N32m. A statement from the EFCC says the convicts, alongside their company, Mustard Seed Micro Investment Limited, were prosecuted by the Benin Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on 16-count charges, bordering on conspiracy to steal and stealing, contrary to Section 516 and 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, CAP 21, Vol 1, Laws of Delta State of Nigeria, 2006. They pleaded “not guilty” to the charges, upon their arraignment on June 19, 2017. Their trial by the EFCC legal team of V. O. Agbaje and K. U. Udus followed a petition and investigation which fingered them in the stealing of the sum of N32,516,620.00 (Thirty-Two Million, Five Hundred and Sixteen Thousand, Six Hundred and Twenty Naira). Two die as container falls on bus in Lagos (photos)

Two persons have been confirmed dead while three others were injured after a 20-feet container fell on a commercial bus at Ilasamaja on the Oshodi-Badagry Expressway in Lagos state. A statement released by the Director-General Lagos State Emergency Management Agency LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, today July 27,  said the accident occurred on Sunday, July 26 and that the dead bodies and injured persons were taken to the Isolo General Hospital. Oke-Osanyintolu said those who died had been identified as a male and female. He said when the LASEMA Responder got to the scene, it discovered that the truck with registration number SGM 715 XA and loaded with a 20-ft container had collided with the commercial bus discharging passengers under the bridge at Ilasamaja at about 7p.m. He said that three other passengers, including the bus driver, sustained injuries and were transferred to the Isolo General Hospital by LASEMA’’s Responder.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, has said that security in Nigeria is currently way better than it was five years ago. Leadership reports that the Army chief stated this in his remarks during a sit-out with soldiers injured in the line of duty at various operations against insurgency, and currently receiving treatment at the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, Kaduna over the weekend. Nurse allegedly hacks his wife and two children to death in Osun

The police in Osun state have arrested a Nurse identified as Tunde Oyeniran, for allegedly using a cutlass to kill his wife and their two children at their home in Inisa town in the state on Friday, July 24. Spokesperson of the state police command, Yemisi Opalola, who confirmed this to newsmen, said Oyeniran allegedly hacked his wife and children to death and thereafter used the cutlass to inflict cuts on himself in the hand and stomach. He then raised an alarm claiming that his family was attacked by hoodlums. Opalola said Oyeniran has been arrested and is currently being treated for the injuries on his body. She said a preliminary investigation revealed a foul play. Man stabs himself to death in Kano after his fiancee abandoned him for another man

A twenty-five-year-old man identified as Ashiru Musa Danrimi allegedly stabbed himself to death with a knife in Kano state after his fiancee abandoned him to get married to another man. According to reports, the deceased who was a member of a Neighborhood watch in Kadawa ward, Ungogo local government area of the state, became frustrated after his fiancee, Umi Muhammad, decided to get married to another man despite committing himself financially and otherwise to their relationship. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Gombe zonal office, has secured the conviction of Samuel Bulus Adamu before Justice N. I . Afolabi of Federal High Court Gombe. A statement from the antigraft agency says Adamu, a former Chairman of Shongom Local Government Area of Gombe State, was first arraigned on March 9, 2015 on a seven-count charge bordering on fraud, cheating and money laundering to the tune of N97, 640, 000.00k( Ninety-Seven Million, Six Hundred and Forty Thousand Naira only). When the charges were read to him, he pleaded "not guilty" to them, thus prompting the EFCC to prosecute him for more than five years. During the trial, prosecution counsels, A. M. Labaran and A. Y Muntaka called four witnesses and tendered several exhibits, in order to prove the case beyond reasonable doubt. A Nigerian man in the U.S., Damilola Bamidele Isaac Samuel, has been sentenced to 33 months in federal prison for ATM fraud. Samuel, 22, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bank fraud on Dec. 10, 2019. He was convicted in Shreveport, Louisiana for using fraudulent ATM bank cards to steal more than $260,000 from dozens of bank customers. According to federal prosecutors, Chief U.S. District Judge S. Maurice Hicks Jr. ordered Samuel to serve 33 months and pay $276,790 in restitution. U.S. Attorney David C. Joseph disclosed the judgement in a statement on Thursday July 23. The judgement was delivered on Monday, July 20, he said. He added that Samuel will face deportation proceedings after serving his term. According to court documents, Samuel conspired with others to steal money from Regions Bank customers. A 30-year-old fraudster identified as Gabriel Oluokun has been handed a 5 year jail sentence for defrauding a Taiwanese to the tune of $22,300 (Twenty-Two Thousand, Three Hundred United States Dollars). The suspect was prosecuted by the Ibadan Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on a six-count amended charge of obtaining money by false pretence, after the anti-graft agency received a petition from one Nduka Lucious in which he alleged that the convict collected the sum of $22,300 from him in three installments on the agreement that he would supply 100 metric tonnes of sesame seed to one Victoria Xhung, a China-based Taiwanese businesswoman whom the petitioner represents in Nigeria. Oluokun reportedly failed to deliver the product as promised and converted the sum to his personal use. One rescued as three-storey building collapses in Lagos (photos)

A three-storey building collapsed along Cemetery road in Ebutte Metta, Lagos state today July 24. The building is located opposite the Ebutte Metta Health center. A 30-year-old woman was rescued from the rubble of the collapsed building. It is not yet certain if there are any casualties as the rescue operation is still ongoing. This incident occurred barely two weeks after another three-storey building collapsed on a Bungalow at Freeman Street, Lagos Island, killing a policewoman and two children. See more photos below..
