An Ikeja Special Offences Court has sentenced a driver, Francis Apai, to 15 years imprisonment for raping his employer’s 17-year-old daughter in Lagos. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Justice Sherifat Solebo sentenced Apai after finding him guilty of a one-count charge of sexual assault by penetration. “The defendant, Francis Apai, is hereby sentenced to 15 years imprisonment without an option of fine,” the judge said. The Prosecutor, Ms Iyabode Oshodi, had told the court that the driver, who resides at 129, Aina Street, Isheri, Lagos, committed the offence on November 19, 2014, at the complainant’s home in Lagos. During the trial, five witnesses, including the complainant, her father and a medical doctor, testified for the prosecution, while Apai testified solely in his own defence. The Police Command in Oyo State says it has arrested a suspect linked with the murder of Azeezat Somuyiwa, on June 5 in Ibadan. Topgistpedia had reported that Somuyiwa, a pregnant woman, was murdered in her apartment at Aba Ijefun, Akinyele area, by yet-to-be-identified persons. The state’s Police Public Relations Officers (PPRO), Olugbenga Fadeyi, who confirmed the incident, said an investigation into the incident had commenced. However, Fadeyi, on Thursday disclosed that a suspect linked to the murder has been arrested. ” A suspect has been arrested with respect to Somuyiwa’s murder and we are currently on that of Bello. ” The police are intensifying efforts to arrest other suspects linked with both incidents,” Fadeyi said. The PPRO also said that the suspect in the Somuyiwa murder was providing useful information that would assist the police in their investigation, NAN reports.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has accused men and officers of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission as well as those of the Nigeria Police Force of acts that encourage internet fraud, otherwise known as Yahoo-Yahoo, in Nigeria. NANS alleged that operatives of the EFCC and the police do collect bribe from suspected internet fraudsters and set them free, instead of bringing them to book. On the day George Floyd was laid to rest, Texas Southern University announced it would give a full scholarship to the 6-year-old whose father’s death in custody has spurred global demands for an end to police brutality. TSU’s Board of Regents, with its foundation board, “has approved a fund to provide a full scholarship for Floyd’s beloved daughter, Gianna,” the university announced in a social media post. “TSU’s executive and academic staff will prepare a place for Miss Floyd if she wishes to attend the University.” George Floyd was born in North Carolina and grew up in Houston, where he graduated from Jack Yates High School in the shadow of TSU. Floyd later moved to Minneapolis, where he died on May 25 while detained by police. Floyd’s funeral took place Tuesday in Houston.
