Internet fraudster convicted for defrauding an American of $2,500

An internet fraudster, Timileyin Awojodu, has been convicted for defrauding an American citizen of $2,500 after posing with the name 'Troy Stone' and using nude pictures to lure his victim. On Monday July 13, a High Court sitting in Osogbo, Osun State, convicted Timileyin Awojodu, after listening to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) prosecutor, Abdurasheed Sulaeman, say Timileyin obtained the money from his American victim fraudulently. The prosecutor revealed Timileyin fraudulently worked with the con name 'Troy Stone' he used in defrauding his victim. The prosecutor while making his case tendered the money recovered from the convict, one iPhone 7, confessional statement made by Awojodu and nude pictures printed on his mail. Timileyin was found guilty by Justice Lifu who ordered that he should be remanded in correctional service after he pleaded guilty to the charge preferred against him and opted for a plea bargain.

Onlookers join forces to lift a car off a toddler after she was mowed down while playing (video)

A 2-year-old girl is fortunate to be alive after being knocked down and run over by a car while playing on the pavement in northern China. As soon as the accident occurred, onlookers joined forces to lift the vehicle off the girl within two minutes after she was trapped under the wheel, reported state media. The girl sustained fractures on her skull, deep cuts on her head and bruises across her body. She was said to be in stable condition. The accident took place last Tuesday, July 7, in the city of Gaobeidian in Hebei Province, according to state broadcaster CCTV. Surveillance footage shows the girl was squatting and playing on a stretch of pavement which doubled as a car park seconds before being hit. Two adults were standing next to the child at the time of the accident. One of them rushed over to the car after the toddler disappeared under the wheel. Actress Regina Chukwu has said that women are wicked and that she fears women. She stated this on her Instagram page on Monday July 13, while reacting to recent reports of some women inflicting grevious injuries on their housemaids. FG releases guidelines for schools resumption

The Federal Government has issued guidelines ahead of the planned resumption of schools in the country. The guidelines, which failed to disclose the date of school resumption, was signed by the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu and Minister of State (Education), Hon. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba. It was developed in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Environment, Federal Ministry of Health and health safety experts in the country The guidelines outlined actions, measures and requirements needed for the safe reopening of schools after the coronavirus pandemic.  The guidelines released today, July 13, requires that students should be aided to maintain social distancing and stay at least 2 meters apart. The guidelines dealt extensively on plans for school reopening and operations, including attendance, social distancing, hygiene, cleaning, and non-pharmaceutical interventions for safe and healthy school activities and programmes.  Mallam Adamu explained that the need t

4.48 million Nigerians apply for N-Power jobs

Recruitment of the third batch of N-Power enrolees has so far received 4.48 million applications. Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Farouq made the announcement via her Twitter handle. Farouq wrote;  “My team and I continue to interface with stakeholders to ensure a successful transition for the @npower_ng. It has been 16 days since the portal opened and we have received 4.48 million applications to date”. Recall that sixteen days after the portal was opened for application, the ministry said over 4million applications have been received.  The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development had also disclosed that only 400,000 applicants will be absorbed into the third batch of its N-Power National Social Investment Scheme (NSIP) at the end of the recruitment exercise.

Ten Nigerian pirates charged with hijacking Chinese ship

10 suspected Nigerian pirates have been charged with hijacking a Chinese fishing vessel, FV Hai Lu Feng II in international waters off Cote D’Ivoire. The suspects who were arraigned on Monday July 13 by the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), were identified as Frank Abaka, Jude Ebaragha, Shina Alolo, Joshua Iwiki, David Akinseye, Ahmed Toyin, Shobajo Saheed, Adekole Philip, Matthew Masi and Bright Agbedeyi. Prosecution counsel Laraban Magaji said the incident which occurred in May this year, violated Section 3 of Suppression of Piracy and Other Maritime Offences Act, 2019 and was punishment under Section 2 of the same Act. Magaji said;  “While armed with weapons, committed an illegal act of violence against the crew on board FV Hai Lu Feng II belonging to Haina Fishing Company by putting them in fear in order to take control of the vessel.” The defendants pleaded not guilty and were subsequently remanded in the Nigerian Navy’s custody. The President of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, Yomi Otubela, says the Federal government has agreed to pay the salaries of private school teachers that are being owed by their school management since the lockdown started in March. A number of private school teachers have come out to cry for help as they have not been paid by their management since March when schools were shut down due to the Coronavirus pandemic. The school management insists they cannot pay salaries since they have also not made money by way of school fees. House agent welds tenant door, locking a single mother and her sick child over unpaid rents (photos)

A single mother was locked inside her house with her sick 2-year-old child over unpaid rents. The incident occurred over the weekend in Njoro sub-county, Nakuru in Kenya.  The house agent welded the door belonging to Rhoda Makoha’s two-roomed rental house while she was inside with her sick child, leaving her four other children outside as they played. The woman reportedly owes four months’ rent arrears totaling to Sh10,000 (N35,885). The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has condemned the recently passed bill on sexual harassment and rape, alleging that it is targeted at lecturers. Manchester City to play in Champions League next season as CAS overturns the club’s two-year ban from European football

Premier League club, Manchester City will play in the Champions League next season after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) overturned the club’s two-year ban from European football. Back in February, Manchester City were handed the suspension by UEFA's club financial control body for "serious breaches" of club licensing and financial fair play regulations. At that time, the independent Adjudicatory Chamber of UEFA's Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) found City guilty of "overstating its sponsorship revenue in its accounts and in the break-even information submitted to Uefa between 2012 and 2016". The findings also noted that City "failed to cooperate in the investigation" and ruled that the club should be banned from European football for the next two seasons and fined €30million (£26.9million). 5 dead, 2 injured in Enugu road accident - FRSC

At least 5 people lost their lives and 2 were seriously injured in a fatal accident on the Nsukka-Obollo road in Enugu State. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Sector Commander in the state, Mr Ogbonnaya Kalu said the accident occurred on Friday, July 10, at Kpokpo junction, by Micho Link Filling Station. He said there were two injured people at the scene and FRSC officials took them to the hospital. He added that the accident was caused by wrong overtaking by a green Toyota Sienna. He said the wrong overtaking led to a head on collision with a truck loaded with fertiliser. All 5 occupants of the Toyota Sienna died. The driver of the truck and his conductor were the two injured people who were taken to the hospital.

Nelson Mandela's daughter, Zindzi dies at 59

Zindzi Mandela, the eldest daughter of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela is dead at the age of 59. She died in a Johannesburg hospital in the early hours of Monday, July 13. News of Zindzi's death has been confirmed by the Nelson Mandela Foundation. Zindzi Mandela's son, Bambatha also shared a photo of his mother with the caption "Rest in Peace". The deceased who is survived by her husband and four children, served as South Africa's ambassador to Denmark.  She first took up her position as the ambassador to Denmark in 2015. She was 18 months old when her father was sent to prison. Her mother was also imprisoned often at that time, leaving her in the care of her elder sibling, Zenani. 24-year-old Badmus Folarin, pictured above, has been arrested by men of the Ogun state police command for using a hot knife to burn the buttocks of a 10-year- old boy, Sunday David, for allegedly licking from a tin of tea at their home situated at Elegushi Street, Owode-Yewa, Yewa South Local Government Area of the state. Madagascar President Andry Rajoelina on Sunday July 12,  said two lawmakers -- one member of the senate and one deputy -- had died after becoming infected with coronavirus. Eleven other deputies and 14 senators had also tested positive for the virus, Rajoelina said. Madagascar had on July 5 placed its capital Antananarivo under a fresh lockdown following a new surge in Coronavirus infections, two months after the restrictions were eased, the presidency announced Sunday. “The Analamanga region (under which the capital is situated) is returning to full lockdown,” the presidency said in a statement. No traffic will be allowed in or out of the region starting Monday until July 20. A strict curfew will be imposed on street movement by people.  The country has recorded 2,573 infections including 35 deaths with the government estimating that the peak will not be reached until the end of August.
